HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Faith Lutheran Church is offering a workshop on how to parent troublesome children.
The course is called “Parenting the Love and Logic Way.” It focuses on how parents can put an end to back talk and arguing.
“It’s so easy to get sucked in to arguing with kids, and then giving in,” said Vicki Fisher, director of family life at Faith Lutheran Church. “I just think that kids get the idea that they can bully other people, because they can bully their parents. It becomes learned behavior, and parents don’t intend for that at all.”
It’s the first time the church has given this specific course, although they offer parenting courses throughout the year.
Parents watch a video with advice from a preacher, and then discuss what they learned with Fisher.
Fisher has been teaching parenting courses at the church for over 20 years. She said the best thing to do is to come up with a key phrase you can keep using in different situations so you don’t always have to come up with a snappy comeback.
Fisher encourages the use of verbal phrases over physical disciplinary actions.
“Spanking is such a short term answer. So if you’re relying on spanking as a parent for your total approach to discipline, then you’ve only got a very short window for when it works,” Fisher said.
She said the use of verbal affirmation and discipline is the way to go. That way you’ll have plenty of years to practice it, and it’ll still work on high schoolers.
The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through the month of January.
If you’d like to register, you have to make up the classes you’ve missed. The class will also be available in the fall and costs $25.
